So I’ve started writing a blog! I’ll admit this is a little outside of my comfort zone. I’ve never been super active on social media and don’t post much content on Facebook or Twitter, but this is something I’ve wanted to do for the past few months and I’ve decided to give it a shot. Overall, I’m pretty excited to start writing, and am hoping to cover a range of different topics here.
First subject to tackle: I’m starting the process of applying to graduate school so I thought this would be a good way to document that experience. Although it is early in the application process, I have already benefited enormously from reading similar blogs on other sites (such as this list of blogs written by PhD students). I thought this would be a good opportunity to “pay it forward” in a sense and document some of my experiences here. Maybe someone somewhere will stumble upon this and find it helpful, and if so then I’ve successfully returned the favor of the blogs I’ve been following the past few months.
Secondly, I thought writing a blog would be a positive way to explore my own professional interests in science. An emphasis here is on the fields of bioinformatics and genetics, but I don’t want to limit myself right away to only writing about certain subjects, so what I’ll say is that if I find something interesting or cool out there, I’ll write about it. With this my own personal goal is to keep everything accessible to as wide an audience as possible. I believe breaking down complex ideas without over-simplifying them is an important skill, and the only way I’m going to get good at it is if I start practicing.
Overall, my motivation here is that I have a lot of questions. I have questions about grad schools, questions about fellowships, questions about science and plenty of other questions. As I navigate the answers, I want to use this space to process and share what I find with anyone following along. I hope you all enjoy it. Let me know what you think in the comments!
